How To Sleep In A Storm

Resting in God is all about trust. There’s a story in the Bible where Jesus is taking a power nap in the middle of a storm. If you can rest in the middle of a storm that must mean you’re putting your trust in something greater than the storm.

Moving to South Florida I learned a lot about storms. Every year we brace ourselves and prepare for a possible hurricane.

At times, the fear and anxiety of a storm can keep me up. I’ve been in some storms in my life that took away my sleep and took away my appetite. God challenged me in this area and I had this thought. If I’m going to lose sleep, I should lose sleep praying. If I’m going to go hungry, I’m going to go hungry fasting.

The one concept Jesus often tried to teach his disciples about is not worrying.

Luke 12:27-28

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!”

I kinda like how Jesus threw a jab at the end of his speech. If he wasn’t from Nazareth, he sounds like he probably would’ve been from Brooklyn.

He ends with “you of little faith” because faith is what you need to rest in the middle of a storm.

Instead of putting our faith in things that more often than not can’t help us in the middle of a storm, we can put our faith in Jesus.

The reason I can put my faith in Jesus is not just because it sounds good but it’s because he has seen me through some storms in the past. I’ve seen him see my friends through some storms in their life.

If he did it before, he can do it again.

I can rest in a storm as long as I let Jesus on my boat.

One Verse

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” - Mark 4:30
